OSIA XENI
OSIA XENI
The church of Osia Xeni is the parish of the district of Kilikiana, which was one of the first neighbourhoods of the refugee settlement. The church originally functioned inside a laundry. Later, its construction began at the junction of Ikoniou and Kordelios streets (today's Cyprus). It was built by the refugees who settled in the area, who were mainly from Mylassa and Pisidia in Asia Minor. It was the largest parish in terms of population and economy since 1925. It was officially recognized in 1926 by legislative decree. The first priest was Archimandrite Filaretos Ioannidis from Mylassa, Asia Minor, who carried part of the relic of Saint Xeni. Also the pulpit, the despotic and icons were brought from Vourla in Asia Minor. The Dardanellians carried the Holy Kara of the newly martyred Saint Theodore of Orfynion of Dardanelles. The transfer of relics was a common practice of the refugees. Material culture keeps memory alive and constitutes the refugees' specific identity.
The first form of the church was a single-aisled tiled basilica, while the present form is a three-aisled basilica without a dome. Part of the church's iconography (from the sanctuary to the middle of the church) was done by Fotis Kontoglou and his students and the rest by G. The work was done by Fotios and G. Bata. The church is a three-storey church and is dedicated to the memory of Saint Xeni, Saint Barbara and Hypapanti. Opposite the church, in the square, the Blockade of Kokkinia (17 August 1944) took place (Holy Metropolis of Nicaea, Nicaea, Theology, Culture 325 - 1987, Nicaea 1988, pp. 355 - 356; Archontia Papadopoulou, Attica Nicaea, Nicaea 1998, pp. 63 - 64).
