YOUNG MEN’S
CHRISTIAN ASSOCIATION (YMCA)

The Young Men’s Christian Association (YMCA) branch, known in Greek as the Christian Youth Brotherhood (ΧΑΝ), was established in 1936 as an affiliate of the YMCA of Athens. In 1925, EAP (Refugee Relief Committee) allocated block 84 (at the intersection of Kastamonis and Theiron Streets) to the American YMCA Club. The director of the Club was E. Deras from the Dardanelles. A single room was constructed on the site, while the rest of the plot remained open, was fenced off, and operated as a gymnasium for the settlement. The Club became a hub for youth athletics.

In 1928, a larger hall was built, and educational and artistic activities began. In fact, the hall of the American Club also hosted the meetings of the first municipal council of the newly established Municipality of Nea Kokkinia in 1934.

From the Interwar period to the present day, the YMCA has remained active and vibrant. International athletes, such as the renowned basketball player Giorgos Amerikanos, began their careers on its historic court. It is a youth organization that offers a wide range of athletic, educational, and recreational programs with a strong emphasis on moral development.
