CHURCH

OF AGIOS IOANNIS CHRYSOSTOMOS

The church of Agios Ioannis Chrysostomos was founded in a shed by the refugees who lived in the area, the majority of whom were refugees from Ephesus and Kirkitsa. In early 1926 it was moved to the place where it is today on the Derva plot, which was purchased under the care of the Archpriest Commissioner Gerasimos. On this plot and in just 18 days, a church 20m long, 11m wide, and 6m high was built. By legislative decree in 1928 it was recognized as a parish church. In 1935, Gervasius laid the foundation stone for the construction of a larger church on the same site. The architectural design was undertaken by the architect of Pontian origin Elias Spanakis. The church contains icons and sacred vessels of the 18th - early 20th century brought by refugees from Asia Minor. The iconostasis, the despotikon, the pulpit and the canopy of the Epitaph are carved in wood and have also been brought from Asia Minor. The church's shrines are marble. The church is bipartite and is dedicated to the memory of St. John Chrysostom and the Holy and Apostolic Kings Constantine and Helen.
