ROUTE 8 (P. TSALDARI)

Panagi Tsaldari is the main central street of Nikaia at the exit of the Metro. It is a pedestrian street with several shops, cafes and entertainment venues. Since the early years of the establishment of the refugee settlement, it was a vertical main street along with that of Josephine Morgenthau. In 1924 the first map of the settlement by the engineer Dionysios Kokkinos shows the name 8 Street, as the streets were numbered.

In March 1925, in the topographical plan of EAP, Street 8 was renamed Epameinondas Charilaou, after the president of the Relief Fund, who had initiated the construction of the refugee settlement in 1923. From 1924 to 1935, this name was retained, until it was forcibly changed following the March 1935 political movement. Since then, it has been called Panagis Tsaldaris Street, after the leader of the People's Party. From the Interwar period to the present day, P. Tsaldaris Street has been the center of the city's economic and social life. Single-story and two-story buildings constructed by EAP were erected along this street and were used as residences and commercial shops.

During the Interwar years, the street was home to numerous tailoring shops, clothing and footwear stores, hair salons, barbershops, photography studios, bookstores, dental clinics, medical practices, and even graphic design ateliers. The Association of Merchants and Shop Owners also housed its offices there. The street’s social life revolved around its recreational venues—cafés, beerhouses, dairy shops, and the kebab restaurant "Aigyptiakon" (Egyptian).

In the post-war period, the street retained its commercial character, but it became more widely known for the entertainment it offered through its cafés, cinemas, and especially the popular music venues of Perivolas and Kefalas, which hosted major artists such as Perpiniadis, Papaioannou, Tsitsanis, Zagoreos, Stergiou, Ninou, Grey, Tzou – Kouloukaki, among others. Panagis Tsaldaris Street was a place of gathering and socialization. Even today, in the collective memory of the city's residents, it remains known as Street 8.
