GARDEN THEATER
(KIPOTHEATRO)

The Garden Theater of Nikaia is located within the Municipal Garden in the city center, at the intersection of Kyprou and Prousis Streets. Since the Interwar period, this area was included in the large-scale expropriation of 1927. In 1930, a legislative decree ordered the reforestation of the Nea Kokkinia settlement. That same year, the Philodasiki Union of Kokkinia was founded to promote the beautification and aesthetic improvement of the urban environment. Tree planting was considered essential as it provided green spaces and helped control rainwater runoff. One of the Union's key initiatives was the reforestation of a hill in Nea Kokkinia, which took place on “Green Celebration Day” and had an official character. Present at the event were the supervising engineer of EAP, scouts, Archbishop Gervasios, a delegation from the Municipality of Piraeus, and citizens of Kokkinia along with students who participated in the planting. During the ceremonial speech by the Union’s president, the wooded area was named “Grove of the Nymphs.”

Thus, what we now know as the Municipal Garden was originally called the “Grove of the Nymphs” and, according to a 1931 topographical plan (Decision A5a/26B93/259), covered an area of 14,000 square meters. In the post-war period, under Mayor N. Tountoulidis, beautification works were carried out in the garden, including the construction of an artificial lake. In 1965, the municipal authorities secured the free concession of the Hill of the Nymphs (Municipal Garden) to the Municipality, along with the hills of Dexamenis and Vokos.

Later, a small theater with a capacity of 700 seats was built within the garden. The Municipal Garden Theater hosts events every year from late May to late September. Its stage presents the Municipality’s Student Festival, performances by the Cultural Department’s workshops, the Intermunicipal Amateur Theater Festival of Attica municipalities, as well as events organized by local associations and institutions, theatrical productions, and musical performances.
