MUNICIPAL ART GALLERY

The collection of the Municipal Gallery was founded in 1976 by donations from Greek artists who responded to the initiative of Dinos Katsafanas, the first elected mayor of Nikaia during the post-revolutionary period, with the aim of promoting the cultural development of the city. Important mature artists, as well as younger painters and engravers, donated oil paintings, compositions on lightweight materials and engravings, resulting in a considerable number of works of art in the newly established municipal collection. The collection of the Municipal Gallery includes paintings, drawings, prints and constructions covering the period from the interwar period to the present day. A significant number of these works were produced in the 1960s and 1970s, while representational tendencies predominate in all the works.

The Municipal Gallery hosts group/individual exhibitions, organized tours and educational programs. At the same time, in the Art History Circles, lectures are held in the form of open courses highlighting aspects of the Western artistic tradition and modern Greek art. As a rule, the subject matter of the circles ranges from the Renaissance to contemporary artistic pursuits, while art from earlier periods is approached on an ad hoc basis. The presentations are accompanied by digital projection, commentary on sources, bibliographical information and, in most cases, by brief notes.
