MUNICIPAL ART GALLERY

The Municipal Art Gallery of Nikaia – Ag. I. Renti 'Dinos Katsafanas' was founded in November 2015. Using a variety of expressive media (painting, engraving, sculpture, constructions, video), its collection records characteristic aspects of Greek art over the course of a century. The initial core was established in 1976 through donations from Greek artists who responded to the call of the first mayor of the post-dictatorship era, Dinos (Konstantinos) Katsafanas. Important mature artists, as well as younger painters and engravers, responded to the appeal, resulting in a considerable number of visual works being gathered in the newly established municipal collection. Significant donations followed in the years that followed and continue to this day, while a substantial renewal was made possible in 2011 thanks to the merger of the municipalities of Nikaia and Agios Ioannis Renti. The Municipal Gallery's art collection was expanded with the addition of contemporary artworks owned by the Municipality of Agios Ioannis Renti, which organically complement the overview of Greek art to the present day. A separate section of the collection consists of contemporary Greek engravings from the Open Engraving Workshop of the Municipality of Nikaia-Agios Ioannis Renti.
