SAINT GEORGE

The Holy Church of Saint George was founded in 1923, in the northwestern part of the refugee settlement of Nea Kokkinia, initially in a wooden shelter, by the refugees who settled in the area, originating from Telmissos (Delmissos), Caesarea, Renkioi (Orfynio), Dardanelles, Magnesia of Shipylos and Choroschioi of Magnesia. The foundation stone for the building of the church was laid in 1925 by the Archbishop of Nea Kokkinia, Bishop of Sebastia, Yervasios, on land granted by the Refugee Rehabilitation Committee. It was built according to the plans and style of the church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary in Delmissos, Asia Minor, under the supervision of the architect Elias Spanakis, and its style is a regular three-cross basilica with a dome. By legislative decree the church was recognized as a parish church in 1926.

In 1931 the church was inaugurated by Archbishop Chrysostomos of Athens. The pronaos is separated from the nave, which is three-storey and is dedicated to Agios Georgios (centre), Agios Charalambos (right) and the Assumption of the Virgin Mary (left). The iconostasis, the high priest's throne, the pulpit and the shrines are carved in wood and have been brought from Central Asia, as well as numerous portable icons of Byzantine and Russian style (17th - 20th century). Sacred vessels, hexapods, gospels, etc. were brought from Delimessa and other provinces of Asia Minor. Of the old hagiographies, only the Pantocrator and the Evangelists have survived. First priests: Vasilios Kathreptidis, Georgios Vougioukleris, Prodromos Iordanidis (Holy Metropolis of Nicaea, Nicaea, Theology, Culture 325 - 1987, Nicaea 1988, pp. 358 - 359; Archontia Papadopoulou, Attica Nicaea. Historical study, 4th edition enriched, Lexypion, Athens 2023, p. 190 - 193, information father Petros).
