GERMAN HOUSES

In 1927, in the northern part of the settlement, under the Republic Square (Fountain), which was then a cemetery, up to Filadelfia Street, in 30 blocks, the prefabricated houses were erected, which were built in Germany. The houses were 38 square meters in area and included two rooms, a small kitchen and a privy. The houses were placed on a concrete base and had a small area at the back as a courtyard. The outer frames of the houses were made of wood, on which asbestos sheets were fixed. The Urban Refugee Settlements Department of the Ministry of Welfare was responsible for assembling the houses. These houses were ‘taken in exchange for reparations from Germany’, according to the report on the activities of the Ministry of Social Welfare. The Germans formed a distinct settlement of 300 houses which housed over 3,000 refugees of lower economic strata who had not been rehabilitated by 1927. The Germanika quarter was one of the poorest neighbourhoods in Nea Kokkinia. Over the years, the subsoil was undermined and a basement was created to which the elderly couple was moved in order to give the house as a dowry.
