KATRAKIO THEATER
KATRAKIO THEATER
The Katrakio Theatre is the largest modern theatre in the country, with a capacity of 5,356 seats. It is located in Nikaia, on the Andreas Papandreou Hill, also known as “Selepitsari”, in an area of 500 acres. It was built in 1983 among the rocks of old quarries in the area. The construction of the theatre was the original idea of the artist Minos Volanakis and dates back to 1982. Following his initiative, the area of the quarries, also known as “Kokkinovrachos”, was expropriated and in 1983, under the supervision of the architect Nikos Perdikaris, the construction of the theatre was fully completed and since then, it has been in operation. At the entrance of the theatre, the visitor has the opportunity to admire the bronze statue created by Memos Makris, where he represents “Don Quixote”, a role played by Manos Katrakis, whose name the theatre bears in honour. From 1983 to the present day, there is not a single great Greek artist, musician, composer, singer or actor who has not passed through the Katrakio.
